Tom McKenna is Director of The Fels Certificate Program in Nonprofit Administration at The University of Pennsylvania where he teaches courses on Leading Nonprofit Organizations and on Advocacy, Lobbying and Government Relations for Nonprofit Organizations and was a member of a university wide inter disciplinary team which developed a joint masters program in nonprofit leadership. He also serves as Co Director of an Executive Education Program at Wharton on Foundations and Endowments. Mr. McKenna was the National Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, a position he held for 14 years prior to coming to Penn in 1999. Prior to moving to Philadelphia in 1985 to head BBBSA, Mr. McKenna spent 25 years in New York City where he was the Executive Director of three major human services organizations: State Communities Aid Association (SCAA), a statewide health and human services public policy and advocacy organization, from 1976 to 1985; United Neighborhood Houses, the Federation of New York City Settlement Houses, from 1971 to 1976; and Hamilton Madison House, a Settlement House located on Manhattan's lower east side, from 1967 to 1971. He began his career as a youth gang worker at Hamilton Madison House after receiving his MSW from Columbia University in 1961. Mr. McKenna serves on the Board of Directors of the William Penn Foundation , Philadelphia Safe and Sound , and the Network Relations Committee of The United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He lives in University City with his wife of over 40 years, Kay, and is an avid sailor with a Captain’s License from the US Coast Guard. |
