Seminar #5

Seminar Title

ETHICS

Description

AAGP Code of Ethics and its Applications:

Have you ever wondered …

Ø      How responsible am I to ensure that funds I helped get are spent properly?

Ø      What do I do if someone wants to tag unrelated program costs into a grant proposal?

Ø      Is it wrong to work on behalf of two competing organizations for the same program?

Ø      What is wrong with fudging these numbers a little bit?

Ø      Why do some common practices in the grants field just not feel or appear right?

If you have never wondered about these issues, you will soon as a grant professional. As grant professionals, we face situations and requests on a daily basis that put us to the ethical test whether we know it or not. Every profession has its moral and legal pitfalls, but the fact that the grants profession is still emerging puts us at a genuine risk of making ethical mistakes due to a lack of knowledge about what is expected of us. AAGP has not only expedited the formalization and legitimization of our profession, but it has a complete Code of Ethics that we as members have the opportunity to utilize and are responsible to adhere to in order to make our decision making easier.

This session will provide attendees the opportunity to either familiarize themselves with or refresh their understanding of AAGP’s Code of Ethics and apply its concepts to real world scenarios in a small group setting. Presenters will introduce each aspect of the Code of Ethics before breaking the session up into small groups. Each small group will take a real life ethical quandary and apply the AAGP Code of Ethics to the scenario. Finally, the specifics of how each scenario relates to the Code of Ethics will be discussed by presenters and the groups working on the specific scenario.

Ethics are an exceptionally important part of our emerging profession, and as Grant Professionals, we have a responsibility to both understand and apply our Code of Ethics to our daily lives.  This session will provide an excellent opportunity to both begin and/or continue adhering to that obligation.
